RESEARCH & STORIES

Editor’s note (updated May 14, 2025):
This post was originally published with a lien sale date of May 20. It has been updated to reflect that the new date of the 2025 NYC tax lien sale is June 3.
🟠 Important Update (May 2025):
If your home is on NYC’s tax lien sale list and you live in a 1–3 family home or condo, you may qualify for NYC’s Easy Exit Program — a fast way to get removed from the list.

Since 1996, with the rare exception that occurred in 2020, New York City has sold the liens of properties with unpaid debts, including property taxes, water/sewer bills, and other City charges. Once a tax lien is sold, a third-party collection agency adds fees onto the debt and interest begins to compound daily. (You can learn more about this process here.) The mounting debt can result in an increased financial burden for families who are already behind on their bills, and can even force some homeowners into foreclosure.
The next tax lien sale is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 2025. Click here for an interactive map that displays the number of households that are on the DOF’s 90-day lien sale list by council district. We will continue to update this tracker at the 60-, 30-, and 10-day intervals ahead of the lien sale.
There are a number of ways that homeowners can get support and successfully remove their homes from the lien sale ahead of the May deadline. To begin, view your property tax account here, or your DEP account here, and see the minimum payment needed to remove your property from the lien sale. If you are unable to pay what you currently owe, there are other options, such as entering into one of three types of payment plans. (See the full range of your options here. We have also put together this helpful explainer.)
If you have further questions or need support with tax lien issues, contact us online, call 1-855-HOME-456, or attend a tax lien sale event. See below for upcoming events in your area.
See below for select dates where the NYC Department of Finance Business Center has extended hours into the early evening (5-7 pm) to help homeowners understand available options to remove their property from the lien sale list. The Center’s Homeowner Help Desk will also be present to answer questions and make connections to free housing counseling and legal assistance.
Edit (4/18/2025): This post has been updated to reflect upcoming events hosted by the NYC Department of Finance, elected officials, and partner organizations.
