Homeowner Protection Program
In 2012, New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman launched the Homeowner Protection Program (HOPP) with funding from the National Mortgage Settlement to combat the effects of the foreclosure crisis in New York State by delivering high-quality housing counseling and legal services to homeowners, free of charge. HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan has highlighted the NY Attorney General’s program as a model for leveraging settlement dollars to help homeowners at risk of foreclosure.
As a HOPP “Anchor Partner,” alongside the Empire Justice Center (which works with groups upstate and on Long Island), the Center provides program management support for the Office of the Attorney General, day-to-day support and technical assistance to the HOPP network, and frequent trainings on a wide range of topics, all with the aim of increasing the knowledge base and skills of our network in order to help more homeowners keep their homes. With the introduction of HOPP, the Center also expanded both its Homeowner Hotline and Escalations Program to help homeowners across the state.
