Christie Peale

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Christie has worked for public service organizations in New York City since 1994. She provided Community Case Management services for people living with HIV and AIDS for both the Citizens Advice Bureau and the Women's Prison Association. She then advocated for Medicare and Medicaid recipients enrolled in HMO plans with the Medicare Rights Center and Gay Men's Health Crisis. While working for the Building Services 32BJ Pension Fund, Christie worked on an employer-assisted housing project, which led her to work for non-profit affordable housing developers in Bushwick and Washington Heights. She joined the Center most recently from the New York State Housing Finance Agency, where she underwrote tax-exempt bond deals to preserve affordable housing, and served as Deputy Director at the Center until July 2011. Christie has a B.A. from Harvard College and a MSW from the Hunter College School of Social Work in Community Organizing and Planning.

GENERAL COUNSEL Lisa joined the Center from Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, where she practiced law for over 15 years in the commercial real estate area focusing on complex transactions involving financing, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions and leasing.  Prior to entering the law, Lisa was an environmental engineer working for Tenneco Gas in Texas and Louisiana. Lisa has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and a JD-MBA from Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School.

CHIEF OF STAFF Sarah Kate supports the Center's Executive Director as well as the senior leadership team in creating and implementing new projects and initiatives, communicating with the Board of Directors, and managing other program components as needed. She is also responsible for developing and implementing the Center's fundraising strategy and managing funder relationships. Previously, Sarah Kate served as the Center's Development Manager. Before joining the Center, Sarah Kate was a Senior Manager at Step Up where she was responsible for donor cultivation and retention. She has also held roles as an Associate at Phreesia, Inc. and as a Legal Assistant at Harris, Wiltshire & Grannis, LLP. Sarah Kate holds a B.A. from Brown University.

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER Natasha Pallan has an extensive background in structured finance, capital markets and economic development.  She began her career in project finance, focusing on non-recourse bank lending to various oil, gas and power projects across the US and Canada.  Later she worked in institutional bond sales at Deutsche Bank, focusing on securitized products, and then in corporate finance at Prudential, managing the company’s capital investments in the domestic insurance business.  She transitioned into the nonprofit sector as the Director of Subsidiary Finance at Empire State Development, New York State’s chief economic development agency.  There, she managed a portfolio of eight large-scale real estate, park and transportation projects across the State with a combined capital cost of $1.5 billion.  Natasha joined the Center from Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School, where she was Chief Financial Officer, overseeing the Fiscal, HR and IT departments and the closing of a New Markets Tax Credit financing.  Natasha holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis, and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

ADMINISTRATIVE LIAISON Ronnie joined the Center in June 2011 as Office Manager and moved to the position of Administrative Liaison in April 2013. In her present role, she is responsible for working with the Center’s grant writer on proposals and grant reports, as well as assisting the Executive Director with board management. Before joining the Center, Ronnie worked at a variety of non-profit organizations as office manager and manger of operations. Ronnie received a B.A. from the College of New Rochelle.

OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR. Acacia joined the Center in September 2015. In her current role, she provides direct support to the Accounts Payable Department and is responsible for maintaining the Organization's expense records, reconciling credit card statements, generating monthly expense reports, and maintaining vendor files . In addition to the work she does with the A/P Department, Acacia also works closely with other groups within the organization, providing documentation support as needed. Prior to joining The Center, she held a career in Banking and Finance for several years in Los Angeles, California where she also attended both Cal State University, Long Beach and Santa Monica College majoring in Business Administration & Accounting.

PROGRAM ASSOCIATE Caitlin joined the Center as an Administrative Assistant in 2011. She is now a Program Associate with the Operations Team. PROGRAM MANAGER Patricia joined the Center in October 2012 as a bilingual Homeowner Hotline Representative. As a Hotline Representative, she was responsible for connecting homeowners to the Center’s Network Partners. As a Program Associate, Patricia assists with grants management. Previously, Patricia was an Entitlement Specialist at a domestic violence crisis shelter. She has several years of customer service, administrative, and banking experience.

DIRECTOR OF HOMEOWNER SERVICES Joseph Sant oversees three of the Center’s interrelated program areas focused on direct casework services for homeowners: Recovery and Resiliency, the Homeowner Hotline, and Escalations. Recovery and Resiliency integrates housing counseling and legal services into Superstorm Sandy housing recovery programs. The Homeowner Hotline team provides information and assistance to homeowners throughout New York State and connects them with foreclosure prevention counseling, Sandy recovery and resiliency counseling, and other services available to homeowners at no charge. The Escalations team partners with our community-based advocate partners to resolve tough or stalled home-saving negotiations. Joseph joined the Center after working as a Senior Attorney at Legal Services NYC, where he brought affirmative impact litigation to combat predatory mortgage lending and enforce consumer protections for low- and moderate-income homeowners. Joseph earned his B.A. at the University of Washington and his J.D. at Georgetown University.

PROGRAM ASSOCIATE  After interning with the Center in 2013, Todd joined the staff as a Homeowner Hotline Representative in the Spring of 2016. This role gives him the opportunity to connect at-risk homeowners with free and reliable counseling and legal services, as well as to serve as a contact point for NYC residents participating in the Build It Back program. Before moving to NYC to join the Center, Todd grew up outside Detroit, Michigan, and studied Economics and Ethnic Studies at Brown University.

SENIOR MANAGER, HOUSING MOBILITY Rudy joined the Center in March 2013 as the Housing Mobility Coordinator. Prior to working for the Center, Rudy worked as a housing counselor in Portland, Oregon, where he worked on its Hardest Hit Program, providing homeowners in distress with economic assistance. His introduction to affordable housing and homeownership came through the AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer Program, where he spent a year working as a tenant advocate. Rudy has a B.A. in Administration from San Carlos University in Guatemala.

SENIOR PROGRAM ASSOCIATE Danielle joined the Center in May 2014.   As a Senior Program Associate, she provides  programmatic support to the Build it Back Counseling Program and Residential Technical Assistance Pilot Program (RTAPP) to advance residential recovery and resiliency for New York City’s coastal communities.  Previously, Danielle worked as a Program Associate at Seedco in the EarnBenefits program helping low-income workers attain government benefits and other work supports. Danielle has a B.A. in International Relations from Stanford University and a J.D. from New York University School of Law.

SENIOR PROGRAM MANAGER Nicole joined the Center in January 2014 as a Build it Back Call Center Representative and Data Specialist. In her role as Program Manager, she leads the Center's Homeowner Hotline team and manages call center operations. In addition to supporting the Center's outreach goals she helps create new opportunities for the Center to serve homeowners. She joined the Center after two years with the Champlain Housing Trust in Burlington, Vermont. Nicole has a B.A. in Global Studies with concentrations in Business and Economics from Providence College.

Before joining the Center, she worked for two years as a member of the AmeriCorps program: first, as a Communications and Development Associate for a Brooklyn charter school; and second, as a Youth Services Specialist for the Brooklyn Public Library. She received her B.A. degree in Communications-Media Studies at the College of Charleston and received her M.A. degree in Public Administration at Metropolitan College of New York.

PROGRAM MANAGER Tiffany joined the Center in February of 2014 as a Build it Back Call Center Representative. Currently, she is the Homeowner Hotline Manager, responsible for supervising the Hotline staff and the day-to-day operations. Prior to joining the Center, she worked for three years at the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office, where she served as a paralegal/case aide for the Domestic Violence Bureau. Tiffany has a B.S. in Criminal Justice Administration & Planning; court concentration from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Public Administration.

PROGRAM ASSOCIATE Sara joined the Center in February 2016 as a Program Assistant – Recovery & Resiliency. She served as an Employment Specialist for adults with developmental disabilities and helped clients with life skills development and advocated for job opportunities in their communities. Sara has a B.S. in Criminology & Justice Studies from The College of New Jersey and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Urban Policy & Leadership at Hunter College, with a focus on Education & Community Development.

DIRECTOR OF LENDING Herman leads the Center’s Lending and Homeowner Support Departments.  He oversees the Center’s Mortgage Assistance Program, Escalations Program and the Housing Mobility Program. Previously, Herman worked as Senior Program Associate for New Economy Project (formerly NEDAP), where he helped to manage its NYC Foreclosure Prevention Gap Loan Fund and worked on research, policy, and advocacy initiatives. For nearly a decade, Herman also previously served as Supervising Paralegal of the Foreclosure Prevention Project at South Brooklyn Legal Services, where he interfaced with hundreds of homeowners, investigated complex predatory mortgage lending cases, negotiated and resolved cases, and worked with attorneys to build cases for litigation in state and federal court.

PROGRAM MANAGER Candybelle joined the Center in August  2010 as a bilingual Homeowner Hotline Representative and later moved into the Lending & Homeowner Support department where she assists Network Partners with escalating cases to banks and mortgage servicers. She has experience working in housing counseling, customer service, and administration and has also worked as a paralegal. Candybelle obtained a Law Degree from Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

PROGRAM MANAGER Jackie joined the Center in October 2013 as an underwriter for the Mortgage Assistance Program. She was most recently a Foreclosure Mediation Specialist for M&T Bank in Buffalo, NY. Her experience there included loss mitigation, underwriting, foreclosure settlement, and mortgage outreach, with the goal of preserving homeownership and local communities. Jackie also holds a B.A. in Spanish Language and Literature and Paralegal Certification from SUNY at Buffalo.

She previously worked at Lawyers Alliance for New York, as the Office Administrator, where she was the primary liaison for clients and provided knowledge of key program components and referrals to other non profit organizations. PROGRAM ASSOCIATE Chris joined the Center in March 2015 as a Program Associate for the Mortgage Assistance Program. Prior to working for the Center, Chris worked as a housing counselor in Staten Island, New York, where he assisted homeowners with applying for modifications, MAP loans, and repayment plans. He has worked in the foreclosure prevention field providing homeowners  with assistance for over 8 years. Chris is currently studying Electrical Engineering at NYCCT in Brooklyn, NY.

DIRECTOR OF NETWORK PROGRAMS Lucy oversees the Center’s network of more than 30 nonprofit partners providing advice and assistance to New York homeowners.  She manages the Center’s grant-making activities as well as the training, support and coordination provided to the network.  Lucy joined the Center in December 2009 after developing affordable housing projects in Scotland. Lucy previously worked in City government, at both the Department of Housing Preservation and Development and the Department of Homeless Services, as well as a consultant at K. Backus & Associates. Lucy has a B.A. from Brown University and a Master of Urban Planning from NYU’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR Braden joined the Center in October 2012. He manages grant communication and reporting for foreclosure prevention and disaster relief projects. Previously, Braden worked for a non-profit organization in Chicago where he led campaigns to establish court-sponsored mediation in foreclosure cases and a vacant property ordinance to address abandoned foreclosed buildings. Braden holds a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Administration from Northwestern University.

SENIOR PROGRAM MANAGER Courina joined the Center in January 2013 as the Senior Program Manager for Training and Support. Courina coordinates the Center’s trainings, manages relations with the Center’s Technical Assistance Providers, and provides resources to the Center’s Network Partners. Prior to joining the Center, Courina practiced bankruptcy law as a consumer bankruptcy attorney in both New Jersey and New York. Courina’s background also includes working in the British Parliament and interning for both a criminal and a federal judge in Brooklyn. She has a dual bachelor’s degree from University of California - Berkeley and a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School.

PROGRAM MANAGER Tara joined the Center in 2015 as Program Manager for Network Programs, focusing on research, monitoring programs, and program innovation. She came from the City’s Office of Financial Empowerment, where for 4 years she managed the integration of financial counseling into affordable housing, workforce development, immigrant services, and other programs serving low-moderate income New Yorkers. Prior to moving to New York, Tara managed small business and asset building programs for Rich Cordray, now the head of the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, when he was Ohio Treasurer and Ohio Attorney General. Tara earned a Master’s in Public Policy and Administration from Northwestern University, as well as a B.A. in Political Science and Russian Studies from Trinity College in Hartford, CT. She is a native of West Virginia, where she first became passionate about the economic justice issues she has dedicated her career to addressing.

PROGRAM ASSOCIATE  Joanie joined the Center in August 2015 and assists the Network Programs team with grant management, reporting, and compliance for foreclosure prevention and disaster relief.  Prior to joining the Center, Joanie worked with The Department of Housing Preservation and Development where she assisted with research that addressed the gaps and successes of former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s New Housing Marketplace Plan. Joanie’s background also includes working with a developer on residential projects throughout New York City.  Joanie holds a BA in Urban Studies from Columbia University.

PROGRAM ASSOCIATE Kevin joined the Center in June of 2015 as a Program Associate. He has prior experience as a Special Assistant to Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and as a housing specialist with the office of New York State Senator Jeff Klein, where he developed a passion for fair and affordable housing. Kevin holds a B.A. in history from Washington University in St. Louis.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR FOR POLICY & RESEARCH  Caroline joined the Center in December 2013 as Policy Manager, working to develop the Center’s policy agenda and communications strategy. In her previous role as Policy Associate for Housing and Homelessness at Citizens’ Committee for Children, she conducted research, analysis, and advocacy on issues affecting homeless families, children, and youth in New York City. Caroline has also worked on land use and community development policy issues at the Center for Collaborative Change in Newark, NJ, and as a research assistant at the NYU Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy. She received a B.A. and M.A. in Political Science from Ohio University, and a J.D. from NYU’s School of Law.
